How AI Companion Apps Work
Knowing what's under the hood doesn't spoil the fun — it calibrates it. Three systems make an AI companion tick: a language model, a persona layer, and an image generator. Here's each, honestly.
1. The language model
Every reply is generated by a large language model — the same technology family behind mainstream AI assistants — running on the app's servers. You type; your message (plus recent context and her persona) goes to the model; a reply comes back in character, usually in seconds. It's genuinely fluent conversation, with a model's known quirks: mostly delightful, occasionally generic, steerable by how you write.
2. The persona layer
What separates a companion from a plain chatbot is the character sheet riding along with every message. In PixelHeart, that's the persona you built: her name, her look (eyes, hair), her archetype (Human, Anime Character, Superhero, Fairy, Gamer, UWU Girl) and up to six traits. Build her witty and adventurous, and the model plays her that way; rebuild her gentle and supportive, and the same engine becomes a different character. The customization guide maps trait choices to conversational effects.
3. The image generator
Ask for a selfie and a separate image model gets a prompt combining her configured appearance with your requested scene — beach, café, gaming setup — and draws it fresh. That's why her photos stay on-model but never repeat, and why she can be anywhere. Generated images collect in the in-app gallery; a server-side content filter screens what the model produces.
What “memory” really means
Here's the expectation worth calibrating: companions work from a rolling window of recent messages, not a database of your life. Within a conversation she's coherent and responsive; across weeks, she won't reliably recall your dog's name unless it comes up again. This is true of the category, whatever the marketing says — the practical move is simply re-mentioning context that matters (“since my exam is tomorrow…”), which the model picks up instantly. Fresh start wanted? Reset Chat wipes the history entirely.
No human in the loop: nothing you write is read by a person replying as her — the pipeline is model in, model out, with your history stored on your own device (details in the privacy guide).

FAQ
Does my AI companion remember everything I tell her?
No — a rolling recent-message window, not a life database. Re-mention what matters.
How are the selfies made?
An image model draws them on demand from her look + your scene. All synthetic.
Why do her replies sometimes miss the mark?
Models predict; occasionally they miss. Rephrase, add context, or tune her traits.
